Health service to focus on testing as Ararat records new COVID-19 case

Stawell Regional Health sees less than 10 per cent the patients Ballarat Health Services does. (ABC News)

Ararat has recorded a new case of coronavirus and Stawell has a new exposure site, on the second straight day of more than 1,000 new cases across Victoria.

It comes as a local health expert urges people to consider who in their community might need help accessing vaccination appointments.

East Grampians Health Service (EGHS) interim chief executive Peter Armstrong said there had also been a positive case in Ararat.

Two tier 2 exposure sites were listed in Ararat on Thursday afternoon, a pharmacy and a supermarket.

"Our response has been around supporting the person who has got the positive case to remain home. We are supporting them two or three times a day," Mr Armstrong said.

"Tomorrow we are planning to establish a drive-through swab clinic at Alexander Oval, and that will start at 8:30am and go through to 6:00pm Saturday and Sunday.

"We haven't been advised of any other exposure sites at this point in time, but that could change quickly."

EGHS said it planned to focus its resources on testing this weekend and there would be no extra vaccination appointments in Ararat.

Ararat Rural City Council is providing food and support to the person with COVID-19.

Stawell Regional Health (SRH) has confirmed a staff member that worked in the radiology department Monday to Wednesday this week has tested positive for COVID-19.

The health service is urging anyone who attended for an ultrasound during this time to get tested and isolate for 14 days.

Anyone who attended the radiology department but did not get an ultrasound must get a test and stay home until they receive a negative result.

SRH has begun a drive-through testing clinic at Stawell Tennis Club at 4:00pm this afternoon, which will continue 9:00am-5:00pm Saturday and Sunday.

There are no other exposure sites in Stawell at this stage, with the health service waiting for the health department to confirm whether this will mean a case will be assigned to Northern Grampians Shire.

At this stage, it is not believed the Ararat and Stawell cases are linked.

Fifty-six per cent of Grampians and Wimmera residents are fully vaccinated, and 84 per cent have had at least one dose.

80 per cent still leaves many vulnerable

CSIRO's health and biosecurity unit director Rob Grenfell, who also works for the Grampians Public Health Unit, said he wanted to help people that could still be unvaccinated when Victoria hit its final reopening target.

"There are those who choose to live isolated lives, people who are cognitively impaired without engaged carers and people culturally isolated from the health system," Dr Grenfell said.

"For those members of our small communities around here, if there is somebody you know who lives a solitary life, ask if they've been vaccinated or if they need assistance."

The public health unit recently launched its Race That Starts The Nation campaign, challenging western Victorian towns to get to 99 per cent full vaccination by the Melbourne Cup Long Weekend.

Victoria is expected to reach 80 per cent of people over 16 fully vaccinated around November 5.

Do we really need booster vaccines for COVID-19?
