Health secretary Sajid Javid to outline new Covid rules to fight Omicron variant on Monday afternoon

Health Secretary Sajid Javid will make a statement in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon outlining the new rules needed to fight the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The variant is causing significant concern around the world with fears it can spread much more quickly than even the Delta variant and could get round vaccine protection.

Omicron was first identified by scientists in South Africa and has since been detected around the world, with three cases already discovered in the UK.

The Government has responded by bringing in travel bans for 10 southern African countries in a bid to slow the arrival of the variant in the UK, with the countries added to the red list.

It means anyone who returns from those nations, including South Africa and Angola, must quarantine in a hotel for 10 days.

As reported by Wales Online, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Saturday that some new rules would be needed to combat Omicron, including the return of mandatory masks on public transport and in shops.

In addition, anyone coming into the UK will also need to take a PCR test.

Mr Javid will detail the new rules to MPS in the House of Commons before they come into force on Tuesday morning. MPs will have a chance to vote on the law within 28 days.

Omicron is causing concern because of the high number of mutations in the virus - twice as many as in the Delta variant.
