Health officials in France announce new face mask rules in force from tomorrow

People in France will need to wear a mask in public spaces from tomorrow - or risk getting fined.

France’s health minister has said that people must wear masks in any enclosed public space, including shops and banks, from Monday (July 20).

Any holidaymakers arriving in the country from Britain will have to follow the new rules.

The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice to reflect the change in policy.

Advice on the gov.uk website now reads: "France’s Health Minister has announced that wearing masks in enclosed public spaces will be compulsory from Monday 20 July.

"This includes shops, covered markets, banks, and other establishments open to the public."

It adds that further details are due to be published soon.

Officials in France made it compulsory for anyone aged 11 or over to wear a mask on public transport from May 11.

Masks are also compulsory in taxis and private hire vehicles without a plexiglass screen.

Health officials have said that fines will be issued for those that don’t comply.

In Britain, people will be required to wear a mask in shops and supermarkets from July 24, as well as on public transport and when visiting hospitals.

Since July 4, France has been exempt from the Foreign Office's blanket advice against all non-essential international travel, along with more than 60 other countries.
