Health Minister Simon Harris spends three nights in hospital after falling ill

Health Minister Simon Harris spent three nights in hospital after falling ill last week, it has emerged.

The Wicklow TD, 32, underwent tests during his stay at St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin and missed a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The Sunday Independent reports that the Fine Gael minister, who has Crohn's disease, felt a pain in his left side last Sunday night and was advised by a GP service to go to A&E.

At St Vincent's, it is reported he was seen within 30 minutes and was checked in.

Although he has private health insurance, he apparently went through the public health system for this issue.

Mr Harris, who is said to have kept working from his hospital bed, fully returned to work in the Dail on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman told the Sunday Independent: "The minister was unwell over the weekend and was admitted to hospital for tests.

"He returned to work on Wednesday and was in the Dail and the Seanad to pass the CervicalCheck Tribunal Bill.

"He has no further comment to make on what is a private matter."
