Health Minister Simon Harris on if you can travel over 5km to play tennis, golf and other sports

The Health Minister has shut down the notion that members of the public can travel more than 5km from their home to play sports.

Tennis courts, golf courses and pitches can now reopen as of today, May 18 - phase one of lifting the lockdown restrictions.

But Minister Simon Harris insisted no one should travel beyond the current limit to use these facilities.

He said: "People say 'look, would it not be okay if I just did this' or 'if I just did that'.

"And I get it, on an individual level that sounds like very little risk.

"The only thing is, if you do it, lots of other people are able to do it and it increases a lot of risk."

He told Morning Ireland on RTE Radio 1: "You do it for golf and then people are going to say the playground is seven kilometres away.

"And people are going to say 'can I do it for that?' And then people will say can I do it for this shop and that shop.

"It's the cumulative effect of all that movement and extra movement brings about extra risks."

Mr Harris also confirmed beaches are back open, meaning people are permitted to exercise by the sea again as long as it is within 5km and social distancing can be practiced.
