Peak health groups are urging the federal government to do more to protect Australians from climate change related diseases or even death.
More than 50 health and medical groups have teamed together to pen a letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, senior members of his government and Labor MPs.
The group includes the Australian Medical Association, Hesta Super Fund and the Climate and Health Alliance.
The letter asks the government to prioritise health in Australia's plan to reduce emissions, decarbonise the healthcare sector by 2040 and implement a national strategy on climate, health and wellbeing.
"By implementing the systematic and ambitious actions on climate change and health described above, the Australian government will demonstrate its commitment to the health and wellbeing of Australians, the economy, and the environment," the letter says.
"This will deliver a decrease in climate change associated morbidity and mortality and the associated economic costs, and unlock substantial benefits from a healthier and more prosperous society."
Energy Minister Angus Taylor, Health Minister Greg Hunt, Environment Minister Sussan Ley and Labor leader Anthony Albanese were among those who received the letter.
Mr Taylor says he wants to achieve net zero emissions "as soon as possible" and "preferably by 2050".
All states and territories have committed to net zero emissions by 2050.
