A request has been made for Leeds City Council members to investigate the impacts of new 5G wireless internet technology.
It follows a request concerning the possible health impacts of the new mobile technology, claiming “numerous instances” of evidence regarding its dangers are becoming available.
The request from the unnamed member of the public states: “I hereby request a scrutiny investigation into harmful effects of 5G technology before any decisions are made to roll it out in Leeds.
“Numerous instances of evidence regarding its dangers are now becoming available and I would like a full investigation before any deployment in the Leeds area.’’

The member of the public also provided additional information to the committee which claims 5G will: “substantially increase exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) on top of the 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, etc. for telecommunications already in place.”
It claims: “Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans.”
However, a Leeds City Council briefing note to committee members claims that there is no concerning evidence that 5G could have serious health impacts.
It stated: “Some people have questioned whether there are health risks from 5G, but experts and regulators say there is no evidence of danger. Similar fears were expressed around earlier mobile internet and Wi-Fi.
“5G technology is new but experts believe it poses no greater risk than earlier mobile systems. To date there has been no specific guidance issued from Central Government on any Health or Environmental Risk Assessment relating to 5G.”
A decision is expected to be made by the committee at a meeting on Tuesday, June 25 on whether to investigate 5G’s effects.
