Health Department confirms 1,725 new Covid cases, 473 people in hospital

Ireland has recorded 1,725 new cases of Covid-19.

There are currently 473 people battling the virus in hospital, 97 of which are in intensive care units.

The latest figures were released in a statement by the National Public Health Emergency Team on Sunday.

It comes as publicans have hit out at the Government’s way of reopening the nightlife sector as like “Keystones Cops meets Father Ted” amid a last-ditch Government decision last night to make nightclubs and live music events at pubs all-ticket affairs.

In final guidelines published last night, the Government has made admission tickets a requirement, rather than a recommendation.

The guidelines came just hours before nightclubs finally opened their doors for the first time in more than 18 months.

Culture Minister Catherine Martin’s Department said in a statement: “Ticketing is required, for the purposes of contact tracing, for all nightclubs and venues and will be the subject of regulations to be put in place next week.”

An earlier version of the guidelines said events should be ticketed “as far as possible” to facilitate contact tracing.
