A health centre in Prestwich was temporarily closed over a fears a patient may have had coronavirus.

It has now been confirmed that the person, understood to have presented with flu-like symptoms, tested negative for COVID-19.

Prestwich Health Centre shut on Saturday (March 7) for a deep clean.

The Fairfax Road walk-in centre was locked, with a note on the door reading: "Closed due to unforeseen circumstances."

The patient tested negative for the virus and centre opened the following morning on Sunday (March 8), a spokesman for Fairfax Group Practice, which runs the service, confirmed.

“It was shut in the afternoon," they added.

"We had a deep clean.

“The patient turned out not to have the virus and we opened again on Sunday morning.”

On Sunday evening, a man in his 60s became the third person with coronavirus to die in the UK.

He was being treated at North Manchester General Hospital, in a specialist infectious diseases unit.

The man had recently travelled to Italy and had 'significant underlying health conditions', NHS bosses said.

There have been 20 positive coronavirus tests in Greater Manchester - four in Trafford; three in Manchester; three in Wigan; three in Bury; two in Bolton; two in Stockport; two in Oldham; and one in Tameside.

The latest data from the government released on Suinday said the total number of patients diagnosed in the UK was 273.
