Health bosses issue important update on Bury patient who caught coronavirus

The patient from Bury who was diagnosed with coronavirus had “limited” contact with others, the director of public health has confirmed.

The unnamed resident became infected following a recent trip to Italy and tested positive for coronavirus at the weekend.

Bury Council director Lesley Jones told the strategic commissioning board on Monday the situation was managed well.

She said: “The situation is well contained. The emphasis is that reassurance to our local population and communities.

"That’s what we’ve been working hard on the last couple of days.”

Dr Jeff Schryer, chairman of Bury NHS clinical commissioning group (CCG), told the board that procedures are working well from a health perspective.

A Prestwich GP himself, Dr Schryer, said the CCG was receiving a lot of guidance from the government.

He said: “The primary care team is very much supporting general practices to implement these plans and we are expecting more plans tomorrow [Tuesday].

“I think it’s fair to say that that more and more of our staff will be sucked into the plans around how we contain and control.”

The council and CCG now work together as one commissioning organisation.

Geoff Little, who heads up the two organisations, urged authorities to work together as they prepare for an outbreak of coronavirus.

He said: “This has to be a joint response across the One Commissioning Organisation, CCG and council.

"This sounds obvious but it’s very important we join together our work on coronavirus.

“This will be a significant early test as to whether the One Commissioning Organisation can respond as one organisation.

“We have to make sure there is consistent and accurate information to the public. Our communications teams across the council worked incredibly hard to make sure the case in Bury was responded to.

“The detail of information will come down from public health, but we have a responsibility to disseminate it.

“At this moment in time, we have staff focused entirely on the response to the virus.

"We are focusing on our business continuity plans and we are looking very closely at which services may be under pressure. That’s at the forefront of our efforts.”

Cabinet member for children and families, Cllr Tamoor Tariq, wanted to reassure parents that schools will remain open.

He said: “There was some anxiety from parents at the weekend. It seems in some situations parents make their own judgements.

"The last thing we want is a drop in attendance.”
