Health board spells Welsh version of 'health' incorrectly on new hospital signs in Cardiff

A health board has been criticised after spelling the Welsh version of "health" incorrectly on several new signs at one of its hospitals.

The large signs, spotted by an eagle-eyed visitor to Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff this week, were directing patients for public health screening.

However the translation of public health screening into Welsh as 'Sgrinio Lechyd Cyhoeddus' mistakenly included an 'L' in Lechyd when it should have started with an 'I'.

A spokeswoman for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said the signs will now be removed from the hospital site.

Whitchurch resident Neil Jones, who took a picture of one of the signs and sent it to WalesOnline, said if the error had been made in the English words then the signs would have been binned.

"It's unfortunate that at a time when the NHS is under massive financial pressures some managers are just not careful enough," he said.

"I question why new signs were needed in any event. The old ones did the job perfectly well."

A spokeswoman for Cardiff and Vale UHB said: “We have been made aware of an error on some signage at our Whitchurch Hospital site and are in the process of replacing them."
