Health Board issues statement after Twitter rumours circulate that two nurses have died from coronavirus

A Welsh health board has refuted claims that two of its nurses have died in hospital.

A social media post was published on Monday night which said that two nurses in the Swansea area had passed away following a period of time spent in an intensive treatment unit (ITU).

The post quickly went viral, being shared thousands of times on Twitter and also on Facebook.

It read: “Two nurses who were in ITU in Swansea have died today. Three more still ventilated. All from the same unit.”

Hundreds of comments were left underneath the post offering condolences to the nurses.

However, Swansea Bay University Health Board confirmed on Tuesday morning that the information shared was not true, and that no nurses working at any of its hospitals had died.

A spokeswoman for Swansea Bay NHS said: “We are aware of an inaccurate tweet circulating making claims of nurse deaths in our ITU department.

“This is false. Can we ask people please check their facts before posting or sharing inaccurate information.

"This is really important at any time, but especially now."

As of Monday, a total of 193 people in Wales have died after testing positive for coronavirus.

Among them is Jitendra Rathod, a cardiac surgeon, who died on Monday morning after being admitted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

On Friday, it was announced that two NHS nurses had died within the space of 24 hours after contracting Covid-19.
