"Around The Clock" is the first solo exhibition for Pira Ogawa, a 75-year-old man, who wasn't trained as an artist but has been painting daily over the past 60 years with enjoyment and calm.
On display are geometrical paintings in various shapes that he has created during two opposing moments -- nighttime and daytime.
Pira began with freehand sketching and progressed to geometric shapes as a result of his passion for geometry at school. When he was a teenager, his family sent him to Japan to study and there he began to hear the voices of insects in his ears.
The voice disturbed and worried him. Rather than giving up, he used drawing to help him heal and he finally found inner calm by drawing and painting geometry.
The exhibition presents two sides of his artistic journey around the clock. The "Nighttime" series features geometric forms of bugs and monsters to represent his struggle when he was hearing insects in his ears. Meanwhile, the "Daytime" series depicts optimism and power as well as the tremendous support he receives from his beautiful family.
The exhibition shows how he can accept these two opposing moments as a natural element of life and how important it is to find a companion such as friends and/or relatives along the way of the long voyage.
Also exhibited are his drawings, pens and geometry rulers, all of which he employed to produce his one-of-a-kind geometric artworks. The exhibition is running at Room 249-250 of River City Bangkok, until Sept 5.
