Headteacher uses Minecraft to give pupils a virtual tour of their new high school

A headteacher has found a novel way to show his new pupils around their secondary school.

With the usual Year 6 transition days cancelled because of coronavirus, Steve Brice decided to get creative.

With the help of his daughters Holly and Ella, he's created a tour of Co-op Academy Manchester on Minecraft.

Using the actual architects' design for the school, they spent more than three weeks recreating every room in the Blackley school, using many thousands of Minecraft blocks.

Pupils moving to the academy from primary in September can take a full virtual tour of the building, visiting the classrooms, library, theatre, dining hall, sports hall and even the climbing wall.

Mr Brice said: "My two daughters, Holly and Ella, play the game Minecraft and, as a throwaway comment one evening, I suggested they make the academy on there.

"At the end of the first evening, I could see the foundations were going down and I realised just how much work would be involved.

"What started as a day became two days, and then a week and then several weeks. It became a real family effort. The more time we spent on it, the more determined we were to get it absolutely right."

The school's website features information and a series of activities to help pupils who would otherwise have been able to attend open days and transition days.

The Minecraft tour can be downloaded from the site here.

Mr Brice added: "As someone who knows the school really well, I'd say it is uncanny how realistic it is. You can really go from any room to any office in the school.

"We haven't left anything out. The Minecraft map of the school is available on our transition website and we have already had some really nice comments from visitors and existing pupils who have downloaded on to their PCs, iPads or phones."
