Headteacher blasted for letter asking parents not to wear 'skimpy' skirts on school run

A primary school has been slammed for asking mums not to wear 'skimpy' outfits or clothes that 'look like pyjamas' when dropping their kids off.

Seymour Primary, in Crawley, West Sussex, claimed parents of its pupils were dressing in clothes that were 'too revealing' after sending out an "etiquette" letter urging families to "set a good example" to kids.

“Wearing clothes that are too skimpy or for other times of day is not setting a good example," the letter issued to parents, marked "Playground Etiquette", said.

Parents branded the note "over the top" in its tone, with one saying it implied mums had been dressing in a "tarty way," the Sun reports.

Senior staff at the school eventually backed down from the initial request, conceding in a follow-up statement that the wording "could have been less prescriptive" and insisting it was meant as "guidance" only.

Co-headteachers Carol Collins and Emma Eardley said: “In response to increasing numbers of parents wearing pyjamas and, at times revealing clothing that looked like underwear, the school issued a note asking parents to consider dressing more appropriately.

“Whilst well intended as guidance, the school acknowledges the wording could have been less prescriptive.”

Pupils at the school, rated good by Ofsted in 2018, must follow strict uniform rules to “give a sense of pride and commitment to its values”.
