'Headscratcher' - BT pundit bemused after bizarre decision to rule out Yerry Mina goal for Everton

BT Sport and former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has described the decision to rule out Yerry Mina's 'goal' as "really harsh."

The Toffees secured all three points against West Ham with a 2-0 win thanks to Bernard's first-half finish and a stoppage-time strike from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

However, the margin of victory could have been much larger after a dominant display, where they missed a host of presentable chances.

To boot, the Hammers were given a lifeline when Mina's header was ruled out for a foul in the build-up late in the second half which would have ended any doubt of the win, with the score still 1-0 at the time.

When the call was made, it was unclear what the decision had been given for - and with referee Paul Tierney blowing his whistle before Mina headed home, VAR was unable to interfere.

Former referee Peter Walton offered his verdict, claiming he thought the free-kick was awarded for a foul by Andre Gomes.

"The only issue I can see is whether Gomes has blocked off the West Ham defender at the top of the box as the corner has been taken," he explained, with Sutton completely bemused by the decision.

After another look at the replay, it's safe to say the former Norwich City and Chelsea striker was unconvinced by the referee's decision.

"I really don't see that there was a lot wrong with that. That was a headscratcher," he insisted.

"I really don't get that. If anything, Mina was being pulled. That's really harsh, it really is harsh on Everton.

"They haven't got what they have deserved so far today. Come on Peter! That's nothing.

"If there's anything in that then it's the tug on the shirt. Everton possibly should have had a penalty but come on.

"Let the play run and then see after. If you're giving a foul for that then you'd give a foul every time a corner kick is taken."

Fortunately for the Toffees, the decision did not affect the result as they went on to claim a much-needed home victory to ease the pressure on Marco Silva.

The Blues travel to Brighton next weekend as they look to build upon today's success.
