Headless body of man found in derelict house in Cork 'had been there since Christmas Day'

Gardai working to identify the partially dismembered body that was found in a Cork City house yesterday are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination to confirm the identity of the deceased.

The man's body was found, missing the head and limbs, by a neighbour in the back garden of Castlegreina House on the Boreenamanna Road in Cork city.

It is now believed that the body may have been at the house since Christmas Day and gardai are appealing to anyone who was in the area since then to come forward.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon at the crime scene, Garda Superintendent Mick Comyns said that a full investigation is now underway.

"We are appealing to anyone who has been in the area and seen any activity around the house since then to come forward.

"It is a derelict house, there should be no one in or around the house.

"I can reassure people that we have a full investigation up and running.

"We have local patrols out in the area and a lot of uniform gardai carrying out house to house enquiries."

"We are appealing to any pedestrians or motorists who might have dash cam footage to contact us at Bridewell Garda Station on 021 4943330, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

The body of the man has now been removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post mortem will take place which will then determine the course of the Garda investigation.

The identity of the man has not yet been revealed, however it has been reported that the body was that of a homeless man in his 50s.
