Heading to the Airport on the Metro? Trains are off all weekend between Airport and Regent Centre

If you're catching a plane this weekend or heading home from your holidays you might have to make alternative travel plans.

The Tyne and Wear Metro has warned its passengers that there will be no trains running between the Airport and Regent Centre stations all day on Saturday and Sunday.

The stations affected are: Airport, Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot, Kingston Park, Fawdon, Wansbeck Road and Regent Centre.

Trains will not be running while track maintenance work is carried out, as part of a £350m investment into modernising the system.

A bus replacement service, the number 900, will be running between the stations and Metro tickets and passes will be valid for the bus journey.

The driver will also be able to sell tickets.

Passengers have been warned that their journey will take longer than usual so they will need to leave extra time.

Different bus stops will also be used at Callerton Parkway as work takes place on the level crossing.

The works coincide with Newcastle United's first home game of the season as they play Arsenal at 2pm on Sunday, with thousands of fans expected to make their way to St James' Park.

Later in the month, there will be no Metro trains between Wallsend and Tynemouth all day on Saturday, August 24 and most of the day on Sunday, August 25.

Overhead lines are due to be renewed during the closure.
