Hugh Jackman is in early discussions to take on the lead role in an upcoming version of Homer’s The Odyssey.

According to The Wrap, the Oscar-nominated star of Les Miserables would play the part of Odysseus, who undertakes an epic, decade-long journey home to his family after the fall of Troy.

The project is being directed by Francis Lawrence, who broke out with Constantine and has since been behind Water for Elephants and the final three Hunger Games films. It reunites him with Lionsgate, the studio in charge of the dystopian adventure franchise.

In May, it was revealed that the story might be split into two films. The project is apparently on fast-track, with an aim to start shooting early next year from a script by Mockingjay screenwriter Peter Craig.

Jackman announced that his next outing as Wolverine will be his last before he hangs up the claws. This Christmas will also see him turning to the dark side with a role as Captain Hook in Joe Wright’s Pan. Forthcoming films from the actor include a role in sports biopic Eddie the Eagle and high-profile Christian film Apostle Paul.
