Headache for drivers as lorry strikes "most hit" bridge in the UK

One of the most-struck bridges in the UK was hit yet again.

The lorry was stuck under the Bellside Bridge in Carlisle Road around lunchtime today after the driver misjudged the height.

An eye-witness said there was a lot of traffic, with no-one diverting cars immediately afterwards.

End of an era as popular Wishaw dairy closes after serving community for 67 years

Cleland councillor Louise Roarty said: "Police were here and inspecting the bridge but a train went right over the bridge while the lorry was stuck below it.

"Traffic is still being allowed to come through from Newhouse.

"I estimate the bridge must have been struck 50 times in the last five years.

"It is one of if not the most hit bridge in the whole of the UK."

The last major incident at the bridge was back in November when a lorry carrying thousands of cans of beer shed its load.

Beer cans exploded, leaving puddles of foam running down the street and boxes blocking the road.
