Headache causes: Nine simple things that could be behind your throbbing head

Most of us are hit with headaches from time to time, and they're not usually anything serious.

Headaches can last between 30 minutes and a number of hours, according to the NHS. Usually, the ache goes away after taking painkillers and drinking plenty of water.

If you have a sore head, the NHS also advises you not to drink alcohol or skip meals - even if you have no appetite. You should also avoid straining your eyes for a long time, for example by looking at a screen.

If your headache keeps coming back, or you feel sick or vomit, and find light or noise painful, you should see your GP. If an injury has caused your headache, or if you experience other symptoms, you should call 111 or maybe even 999. More information can be found here.

Headaches are often caused by an illness, such as a cold or the flu. Stress, drinking too much alcohol, and bad posture are also listed as triggers on the NHS website.

Not eating regular meals, and not drinking enough water, can also caused headaches - as can eyesight problems, taking too many painkillers. Headaches can also come on while you are having your period or during the menopause.

Stress can make headaches worse, according to the NHS. So if your head is throbbing, try to relax. And be sure to get plenty of rest.
