Head teacher in 'disbelief' after featuring in New Year Honours list for Newton Mearns volunteer work

A former head teacher says she is in "disbelief" after being recognised for her volunteer work in the Kings New Year Honours list.

Gillian Caldwell has spent over four decades supporting scouting in the Clyde region and nationally across a variety of different voluntary roles and is now reaping the rewards of her dedication and hard work.

She started volunteering at her local scout group in Crookfur, Newton Mearns, in 1977 as a cub scout leader.

Gillian remains actively involved with her local group, the 35th Glasgow, as the group scout leader and has been awarded The Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for the positive impact she has made in her line of work.

She was recognised for her services to scouting, including her former role as Deputy Chief Commissioner of Scouts Scotland which she held from February 2019 to July 2022.

Speaking on the achievement, she said: “I suppose my first reaction was one of disbelief, but it is certainly a huge honour to be recognised in this way. It is also great recognition of Scouting and the commitment of so many volunteers.

“My volunteering is a mixture of working with both young people and adults, but every volunteer activity is ultimately about providing fun and adventure for young people and contributing to their skills and development. That’s why volunteering with Scouts is so varied and fulfilling - more adults should have a go!”

Speaking about Gillian’s contribution to scouting in Scotland, Andrew Shakey, Chief Commissioner of Scouts Scotland said: “Gillian has made a significant contribution to Scouting in Scotland and we are delighted that she has been recognised for her efforts with an MBE in the King’s New Year's Honours List.

The 35th Glasgow scouts group visit Gillian to congratulate her on the MBE (Clyde Scouts)

“Gillian has dedicated 45 years of service to helping young people develop important life skills through Scouting, both in Clyde Region and across Scotland. It is wonderful that her hard work and dedication have been recognised with this honour.”

Upon hearing the news of her award on Hogmanay, her local group including representatives from all sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers) made a surprise visit to her home to congratulate her.

Karen Imrie, the Deputy group Scout Leader at the 35th Glasgow said: “Gillian has had a huge impact on the lives of countless young people and their families in our local area, encouraging every member to develop “skills for life” and reach their full potential, through section meetings, residential, adventurous and international experiences.

“Gillian also provides huge support and encouragement to her own and the wider leadership team, willingly sharing her knowledge, skills and experience. Gillian has ensured that the 35th Group is recognised as part of our local community, carrying out services projects and supporting local initiatives.”
