Head teacher at Bishopston Primary School in Swansea to stay at home after parents' concerns over coronavirus

A head teacher said he will not be in school this week after parents raised concerns about coronavirus following his recent visit to northern Italy

John Owen, head teacher of Bishopston Primary School in Swansea, wrote to parents on Friday to explain his decision to work from home this week.

In the letter, seen by WalesOnline, Mr Owen said the advice from health authorities is to self isolate if you feel any symptoms of coronavirus and stressed that he has not felt any symptoms.

But he said a "number of parents have understandably been concerned and rung school or shared their concerns through social media". He said the chair and vice-chair of the school's governors have asked him to work from home this week as a precautionary measure "to help alleviate concerns".

Twelve new patients in England have tested positive for Covid-19

It comes after Public Health Wales confirmed on Friday that a person has tested positive for coronavirus in Wales. It is understood the patient was from the Swansea area and Public Health Wales said they had recently travelled back from northern Italy.

In his letter, Mr Owen stressed that the case of coronavirus confirmed in Swansea on Friday was "not in relation to a pupil or staff in any of Swansea's schools or any organised school trips."

Mr Owen told parents he was skiing in Sestriere in northern Italy last week. He said this is about four hours away from any area under quarantine and said this is the equivalent of being in Gower when people affected are in Snowdon.

Mr Owen said he will be able to deal with emails this week but apologised for being unable to have meetings and phone calls "in the normal way".

There are now 35 cases of coronavirus in the UK after 12 more cases were confirmed in England on Sunday.
