During an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun, Resona Holdings Inc. President Masahiro Minami stated that the company "hopes to reduce office work to zero in three to five years." Through the promotion of digitization -- converting the work from paper to digital form -- the number of clerical staff members will be reduced, and they will be subsequently transferred to sales departments. This initiative was designed to boost the efforts to support companies suffering from the novel coronavirus pandemic.

A third of Resona's workforce of roughly 10,000 employees are members of the administrative department which manages account applications filled out by customers. In the future, the company plans to reduce clerical work by allowing more customers to input relevant data via in-store tablets and recommending applying via smartphone apps.

Minami said: "By increasing the number of sales representatives, we will increase the number of points of contact with customers and attentively respond to the concerns of our customers affected by the new coronavirus." There are also plans to improve consultation services for business succession, mergers and acquisitions of small and midsize companies.
