Head of Bristol City's medical department departs immediately amid supporter scrutiny

As a season that will be remembered for a crippling injury list nears its merciful end, Bristol City have announced the immediate departure of head of performance Andrew Rolls.

Rolls, who has overseen City's medical department for almost three years, leaves to "pursue a new challenge".

“I’d like to thank all my colleagues who have been a huge support in my time at Bristol City," Rolls said in an official club statement.

"They are dedicated professionals and deserve every success. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I hope I have put in place processes that will move the club forward.”

Rolls has faced increasing scrutiny from supporters this season following a lengthy injury list that has derailed the club's campaign.

There have been an unusually high number of hamstring injuries, in particular, plus there have been reports in the national media stating players and their representatives are unhappy with the treatment they have received.

Joe Williams, Liam Walsh and Callum O'Dowda are among players whose seasons have been marred by ongoing niggling injury problems.

He was brought in under the leadership of departing CEO Mark Ashton, who is headed for Ipswich Town's boardroom at the end of the season. Rolls, perhaps, could join him at Portman Road having worked together previously at Watford.

“We wish Andy all the best," chairman Jon Lansdown said.

"He has worked tirelessly for the club over the last three years and, especially in the past 12 months, he has helped the staff and the players through a difficult period with the COVID-19 pandemic, for which he should be given due credit.”
