'He wasn't alone': man who died after taking ill in the Pentland Hills comforted by good samaritans

Pentland Hills users have spoken of their sadness after a 30 year old man died after falling ill on Turnhouse Hill near Edinburgh.

The man, believed to be a hill runner, became unwell while out in the hills on Sunday morning.

Midlothian emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised just after 10am, and the man was helicoptered from Turnhouse Hill to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but died a short time later. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Locals who were on the hill at the time and who came to the young man's aid have expressed their deep sadness at his death in an online post in a Pentland Hills social media group.

One woman who said she stopped to help said: "We tried and did everything we possibly could. I hope his family know he wasn't alone. I held his hand."

Another woman added: "We all did our bit and I just wish we had a different story to tell."

"He may have started his run alone on Sunday - but he was definitely not alone at the end, there were a fair few people looking after him and I hope that brings comfort to those left behind."

Several others said that they hoped word got to his family that he had many people with him, and said they would be happy to speak to the family if they wanted to ask any questions about the tragic event, with one saying:

"I would like to reach out to them. I feel so sad that we went through that with him and don’t even know his name."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to assist emergency service partners after receiving a report that a person had taken ill on Turnhourse Hill, near Penicuik, at around 10.05am on Sunday.

"The person was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by ambulance."
