“He was just the salt of the earth” - Tributes paid to electrical worker dad killed on road

Tributes are being paid to a 39-year-old electrical engineer who died when he was hit by a vehicle while working in the road.

Tragedy unfolded on Sunday when Martin Parker was one of two North West Electricity men working in Featherstall Road.

In the accident, which also left thousands of people in Rochdale without power, both men were injured, but father-of-two Martin was later pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood Martin lives in the Denton area and is well known to regulars in The Chapel House pub in Stockport Road.

The pub has already organised a Halloween fundraiser for the family on October 30 from 8.30pm until late and on October 31, from 1pm to 5pm.

Bunches of flowers left by anonymous well-wishers have meanwhile appeared at the scene.

Two of Martin’s colleagues paid tribute to the father-of-two, who they described as a ‘friend in work and out of work’.

Gareth Williams, who had worked with Martin for around 15 years, told the Manchester Evening News: “There’s not a bad word to say about him.

“He was a devoted father and husband, a stand-up guy. He would do anything for anyone and nothing would ever get him down.

“He was just the salt of the earth.”

Jack Shaw, who worked with Martin for about four years, added: “He was genuine, kind and the most selfless person.

“He was always positive, always happy. I can’t think of any time when he wasn’t in a good mood, no matter what was going on.

“He was just Martin.”
