'He was a force of nature': Second pilot killed in Darwin crash named

The second pilot killed in a plane crash on the outskirts of Darwin on Monday has been named.

Daniel Burrill was one of two pilots killed when the plane he was in suddenly dropped from the air above Howard Springs on Monday.

Pilot Darcy McCarter, 23 was also killed on the Air Frontier flight to Elcho Island, which was carrying the corpse of a Yolngu man aboard.

John Burrill made the painful announcement of his son's death in a Facebook post.

"It is with agonising sadness that Sonya, Mathilde and I have to announce the passing of our oldest son, Daniel," he said.

"Our hearts are shattered. Our minds are reeling with hurt. Dan was a force of nature. A young man of 33, full of life, love and purpose".

In the long chain of tributes on Mr Burrill's Facebook post, many recounted their memories with 'Dan'.

"Loved him and his silly antics. I hope for comfort and peace in your hearts for what I know will always be a place of sorrow yet reminders of your crazy smart son. I just don't know what to say," Kelly Hetherington wrote.

"I was one of many who were lucky enough to train with Dan when we were all aspiring student pilots in Brisbane and I cannot speak highly enough of him as a friend and fellow student," Jirik Haselgrove wrote.

"Quirky, funny and incredibly passionate about his flying, he was such a great bloke to be around and the aviation industry is worse off today for his and Darcy's loss."
