'He turned into Messi' - Joe Gelhardt's special Leeds United praise after what he did

Leeds United's young forward Joe Gelhardt delivered another spectacular moment in his few first-team appearances as a sublime piece of skill led to an assist for Pascal Struijk. That goal meant Leeds earned a potentially vital point towards securing the club's Premier League status for another season.

The 20-year-old received the ball from Diego Llorente inside the penalty box and with the clock ticking beyond 90 minutes. He controlled the bouncing ball and drove to the by-line, where he sold Lewis Dunk two dummies to leave the Brighton captain on the floor. Gelhardt then dinked it over the body of the centre back before crossing to the back post for Struijk to head in.

Leeds fans and media alike have been praising the incredible skill and composure from Gelhardt to deliver such a moment when it was needed. On BBC's Monday Night Club, Micah Richards added his voice to the praise, comparing the Leeds forward to arguably the best player of all time, as he stated his confidence that Leeds could survive the drop:

"Maybe it's the Yorkshireman in me but I think Leeds will do it. Something in me just tells me. That vital point. Did you see Gelhardt's run? He turned into Messi for five seconds," said the Leeds-born former Manchester City defender.

"It just gives them that spirit. I think they can do it, I really do."

Leeds will know the size of the task ahead of them on the final day when Everton and Burnley play their games in hand on Thursday. Everton can secure their safety with a win but are still catchable should they drop points, whilst Burnley must take at least a point in their match against Aston Villa in order to go into the final day ahead of Jesse Marsch's side.
