Toronto police said officers responded to a shooting call near Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard at about 7.23am on Friday, where they found Navneet Kaur with a gunshot wound. She was given emergency medical aid but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators allege Kaur and the suspect briefly interacted before the man opened fire. Police said the suspect fled before officers arrived but was later located and arrested by the Ontario Provincial Police following further investigation.

The accused, a 37-year-old man from Brampton, has been charged with first-degree murder and failing to comply with an undertaking. He was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Saturday.

Toronto police believe the shooting was targeted and said there are no outstanding suspects. The homicide unit is leading the investigation.

A witness told CBC News they saw a man following a woman who appeared to be in her 20s. The witness said the man spoke briefly to her before she turned around, after which he fired a single shot and fled the scene.

There did not appear to be any argument before the shooting, and they immediately called emergency services after the woman collapsed. They also briefly tried to follow the suspect, the witness said.
