'He's not great at all', Steve Bruce's worrying Covid update on Karl Darlow

Karl Darlow could be touch and go for Newcastle United's next friendly at Rotherham United.

The Toon shot-stopper tested positive for Covid last week and has been self-isolating but the 30-year-old is still recovering.

Steve Bruce has gone with youngster Dan Langley in the last two fixtures at York City and Doncaster Rovers, but could have Mark Gillespie back this week.

Martin Dubravka remains injured and likely to miss the start of the season.

When asked about Darlow's chances for the game with the Millers, Bruce said: "Karl Darlow is still not very well.

"He's not great at all, unfortunately with COVID at the moment."

AFC Bournemouth are waiting for the green light to complete Freddie Woodman's loan deal, but Gillespie could give Bruce another option on Tuesday against Rotherham then Burton Albion on Friday.

Bruce said: "The goalkeeping situation should be a little bit better.

"Certainly we've got a couple of them who are self-isolating, they'll be OK."

Bruce also explained why Matt Ritchie was an absentee at the Keepmoat Stadium for the 3-2 win against the League One side.

He said: "Matt Ritchie, unfortunately, was a little bit stiff this morning after yesterday and we didn't take any risks.

"We won't take any risks with any of them, it's pre-season.

"He'll be OK, he'll be OK for Monday, I'm sure."

By Tuesday, Bruce could also see Javier Manquillo, Joelinton, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar back in contention.

He added: "He's got a thigh problem, as you've seen, so we weren't going to risk him.

"We hope that he's going to join in on Monday, along with Manquillo.

"We've got Krafth and Schar back on Monday."
