'He's like Ian Wright' - Max Watters compared to Arsenal legend as Swansea City told transfer asking price

Crawley Town boss John Yems has compared Swansea City target Max Watters to Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

The striker has emerged as a transfer target for the Swans this month as Steve Cooper bids to add more firepower to his ranks in the January transfer window.

Having missed out on a loan swoop for Southampton's Michael Obafemi, Watters is now a prominent figure on Swansea's wish list.

And the 21-year-old's club boss Yems believes the frontman is destined for the top flight having netted 16 times in 18 appearances in all competitions so far this term.

“I think Max is Premier League,” Yems told the Mirror.

“He reminds me of Ian Wright, his enthusiasm to play and the way he is. He’s got a real hunger. He’s a good kid, good family.”

It's understood the League Two club want upwards of £1m for the young forward, although Swansea would be keen to do a deal for a much lower six-figure sum.

Cooper is eager to add a striker and a No.10 to his ranks this month following the premature exits of Morgan Gibbs-White and Kasey Palmer who were recalled by Wolves and Bristol City respectively this week.

It comes after Crawley's technical director Erdem Konyar boldly stated his side would demand a seven-figure transfer fee for Watters should clubs come calling.

“If they rang me today, I’d quote him £2million,” he told The Athletic, having previously stated he would demand £1million.

“For me, he’s the most valuable striker in England. The fact he’s 21 and (therefore) won’t matter for the squad registration and the salary cap makes him more valuable but there is strong interest, and from abroad as well.”

When asked ahead of his side's FA Cup third-round clash whether a striker was the priority in the market this month, Cooper responded: "I think there’s a few positions I would like to add to. But until we do it then we carry on working with the boys.

"At the moment we have got every base filled, if you like. Maybe we need cover in some positions, every manager will give you the same answer this week.

"Whether it’s a striker or another position, I’m not sure what the priority is. If there’s a chance to do some business that we think is right then we’ll do it."

The January transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday, February 1.
