"He's like a father, a big brother, a friend" - Fans mourn the end of Alan Robson's Night Owls show

He's been described as an "absolute legend" and a "North East treasure".

For decades, thousands of people have been tuning in to listen to Newcastle broadcaster Alan Robson on Metro Radio and TFM.

Now, after 40 years, his Night Owls show . The last episode will be aired on June 27, it has been announced.

Metro Radio has said: "We are focused on delivering a more consistent format across our day and night offerings, as well as a greater selection of music for our audience.

"With this in mind we feel that we no longer serve as the right platform for the show."

The news has devastated his fans, many of whom have been listening to him since they were teenagers.

ChronicleLive has been inundated with messages about the award-winning host and many have commented about him on our Facebook page.

Julie Phair, 50, of Heaton , Newcastle, said: "I have been listening to Night Owls for 35 years and I always fall asleep to it.

"I was absolutely gutted to find out the show is going to end. Alan is like a North East saviour, he's part of the North East, like Kevin Keegan.

"He can go from being so funny to being like a counsellor for some people. He is like a father, a big brother, a friend. He's real.

"I'm absolutely heartbroken for him."

Suzanne Hope, 51, from Washington , added: "I just think it's disgusting that they are ending the show.

"Alan Robson is brilliant at his job, he's fantastic with people.

"People with learning disabilities phone in and he's absolutely great with them. For the people who phone in with problems, he's like a lifeline. He's like a counsellor, he helps them with their difficulties."

Some have said that, with Alan gone, they will not listen to Metro Radio any longer.

Norma Anderson wrote on our Facebook page: "Oh my God, I'm 75 years old, listened to you since you took over from James Wales.

"You keep the elderly alive with something to look forward to. I hated Friday and Saturday when you weren't on.

"What's wrong with people? Well for one, I will ban that station from now on. Well Alan, you are and have been a part of everybody's family. Good luck love."

Susie Wilson added: "I've listened to the show since I was 10. Cant believe Metro are pulling the plug on it. I hope another station sign him up and Night Owls can live on. It was so sad last night, no one wants it to go. Metro are doing the wrong thing."

And Anna Hughes wrote: "When Night Owls finishes, Metro Radio will have lost a listener for good. The powers that be at that radio station have made the biggest mistake ever in getting rid of Night Owls.

"It is the best show on that radio station and I'm pure gutted. Metro Radio you will lose a lot of listeners from 10pm. It's absolutely shan, ganna miss listening to it so much."

A petition has been started on Change.org to "Save the Night Owls" and a campaign page has also been set up on Facebook urging Metro Radio to rethink the decision.

Tom Haynes, Metro Radio/TFM regional content director, said: "Alan's contribution to our business and the radio industry is unprecedented and we are deeply appreciative of his commitment over the decades.

"He is without doubt one of the most successful broadcasters of our generation and he still has the passion and drive to keep on doing what he loves, live radio."
