'He's done great' - Pundit on the Newcastle United player Steve Bruce 'loves'

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce remains a big fan of Matty Longstaff - despite his recent lack of gametime.

That's the view of the Magpies' boss son Alex Bruce, who believes United's head coach has been pleased with the teenager's displays so far.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign so far on Tyneside, netting a memorable winner on his Premier League debut against Manchester United.

However, Longstaff did not make the matchday squad for Saturday's draw with Burnley, and his last league start came at Everton in January.

The young midfielder's future on Tyneside also remains the subject of speculation, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

Bruce Jr admits it is difficult for any young player in the Premier League to cope with the demands of top-flight football.

Despite this, the former Hull City defender reckons the 19-year-old has impressed the Magpies' boss  in his appearances so far.

Speaking to Football Insider, Bruce Jr said: “Matty Longstaff, Dad loves him, he says to me he’s done great when he’s come in and played.

“Difficult for a young lad to come in and play every week in the Premier League, the demands of the Premier League.

“Any young player will tell you that, but when you get to my age now and you look back on your career you’re a little bit up and down until your consistency levels (balance out) and you know what’s required of you week in, week out.

“It takes a while to get to that level.”
