'He's come from nowhere!' Ireland and Lions star picks Taine Basham as world game's player of the autumn

Taine Basham has been picked out as the most impressive player of the autumn by Ireland and Lions flanker Sean O'Brien.

The Dragons openside played every minute of every match as Wayne Pivac's side won two and lost two in a highly-demanding autumn schedule.

Heading into the campaign, Basham had just three caps to his name, all coming off the bench during the summer against Canada and Argentina twice.

But the abrasive 22-year-old was given a heavy workload in the most recent campaign due to injuries to Justin Tipuric, James Botham and Josh Navidi.

He took his chances, churning out a number of impressive performances and earning man of the match in the 29-28 win over Australia.

Asked to pick the player that had impressed him most, O'Brien said on the House of Rugby Podcast: "I think I will go with someone like Basham, just who has impressed me. I knew what Caelan was about and it was just a matter of time when he came on the scene.

"Basham, for me, because has come from nowhere. He is an international player now at a very high level. He didn't put a foot wrong on the weekend and is going to be a very important player for Wales going forward."

Co-host Alex Goode added: "I think they have found an absolute talent in Basham. He is up there for team of the autumn for me. He's been brilliant."

Basham now heads back to the Dragons ahead of a busy two months before the Six Nations.

He will be hoping to continue the form that impressed so many this autumn but is likely to face stiff competition for the No.7 jersey as Justin Tipuric returns to full fitness.
