'A Rolls-Royce' - Ex-teammate says Bristol City defender wanted by Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United is destined for the Premier League

A Bristol City defender's ex-teammates believes he is destined for the Premier League.

Wigan Athletic winger Gary Roberts played alongside Adam Webster at Portsmouth and believes the Robins man 'will go to the top level'.

The worrying comments come at a time when Webster has been linked with a host of top flight sides, including Aston Villa, Newcastle and Southampton.

Everton are now said to have also joined the race.

The 24-year-old centre-back was in majestic form in his debut season and Ashton Gate and became renowned for his cool head on the ball and ability to pass out from the back - drawing tongue-in-cheek comparisons with some of the greatest defenders of all time.

Such is his calmness on the ball, City boss Lee Johnson has also opted to deploy him in midfield on occasion.

He was named as Bristol City's player of the season following his outstanding campaign.

Lee Johnson outlined on Thursday that talk of a £12m price-tag on the head of the 24-year-old is ridiculous and City are determined to hold onto the centrepiece of their team as they make another bid for promotion to the Premier League.

Speaking to the Portsmouth News, Webster's former Pompey teammate said: "Webbo could play in the Premier League, he’s a Rolls-Royce player.

"He is unbelievable, I still speak to him, he is such a lovely kid, you want people like those pair to do well – and I think they will."

Roberts played alongside Webster during the 2015/16 season before the latter joined Ipswich.

The 35-year-old added: "Webbo has kicked on again, he is among the best Championship defenders now, there’s a lot of people speaking about him. I’m a great fan.

"And he will also go to the top level."

Roberts added that he is not surprised to see another Pompey man heading to the Premier League in Matt Clarke.

Reportedly a target for Bristol City, the 22-year-old is set to join Brighton.

"Clarkie came in the first day and you just knew straight away. This man in a boy’s body who looks 40 – it was 'Wow, this fella can play,'" he said.

"I think will now establish himself in the Premier League, I really do. He will play, not just sit in Brighton’s squad, he will have a good career."
