'He’s a massive asset' - Pundit praises Newcastle's move for Andy Carroll

Danny Mills believes new Newcastle United signing Andy Carroll could be a game-changer.

The forward rejoined the club on deadline day after leaving West Ham following the conclusion of his contract at the end of last season.

A product of the club's youth system, Carroll rose through the ranks at Newcastle, before going on to score 33 goals in 90 appearances for the Magpies, with 11 of those coming in 19 Premier League games before his £35million move to Liverpool in January 2011.

And Mills, speaking to Football Insider , believes if Steve Bruce's side can get the former England man fit and firing then he can become a real asset

“A strange move really. I think Newcastle were just looking to get another number in," the former Premier League full-back said when asked about the deal.

"I’m pretty sure he’s on a pay-per-play basis, his wages won’t be particularly high.

"If you can get him fit, and keep him fit, he’s a massive asset. He can be a game-changer, bring him on defensively obviously in the air. Chuck him up front and he’s still one of the best headers on goal around.

“If you can get him fit and keep him fit, he could be a very cheap asset.”
