'He needs to understand' - Ex-Premier League referee sends message to Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson

A former Premier League referee has highlighted how opposition teams may target Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Alisson, along with his manager Jurgen Klopp, felt his own goal in Liverpool's 3-2 defeat at West Ham United should have been ruled out for a foul.

That much was clear when the Brazilian took to Instagram after playing for his country during the international break.

Alisson said, ‘when you can use your hands, the job is not so hard’, which was clearly a dig at the officials who allowed West Ham's opening goal to stand.

But Keith Hackett, who refereed in the Premier League in the 90s after a long Football League career, believes no offence took place.

And he feels Alisson may have let opposition teams in on a 'weakness' that could be targeted.

“I’m not a goalkeeping expert but I think the first thing is, if you come off your line to make a save you’ve got to ensure you can get the ball,” said Hackett to Football Insider .

“Therefore, I think, ultimately the space on a football field is shared between 22 players.

“There’s nothing preventing a forward from standing in front of the goalkeeper. He’s got to find a way around it.

“There’s no offence here. He needs to understand there was no offence, he needs to understand, just like a referee who’s made an error, he’s made an error.

“He’s not going to suddenly get players moving out of the way so he can collect the ball.

“He’s shown a weakness and this is now where referees have got to focus a bit more. There might be those that do cross the line.”

Alisson has been one of the standout players for Liverpool during their Champions League and Premier League -winning campaigns and will be integral to their hopes of challenging for major honours again this season.
