Young Charlie Kelso has a need for speed.
He may only be 10 years old but the Cleish Primary School pupil is already steering towards a bright future on the track.
Further evidence was provided this month when Charlie produced a podium-topping performance at the East of Scotland Kart Club in Crail.
A winning drive at round two of the Association of Scottish Kart Clubs (ASKC) Super Series ‘A’ Plate was mightily impressive.
Competing in the cadet class, the Kinross-shire driver can reach speeds approaching 60mph in his trusty number 95 machine.
And now a trip north for the final round at the North of Scotland Kart Club in Golspie is just around the bend on August 29.
Proud mum Sarahjane said: “The fact Charlie has won a round of the Super Series is brilliant.
“It is some of the best kids in Scotland who are competing for the championship.
“He is a wee local kid and it’s a big deal for him. I’m sure he will be going to the final round at the North of Scotland Kart Club in Golspie feeling very confident.”
Charlie grew up watching his older brother Liam (14) star on the track and quickly wanted a slice of the action.
It would be fair to say that there is a competitive edge within the Kelso household.
Sarahjane smiled: “Charlie has always been around cars and his big brother started karting when he was eight.
“It was inevitable that, when Charlie turned eight, he would start karting as well. He just loves the thrill of it and is a natural.
“Charlie and Liam are already starting to count trophies to see who has the most.
“He very much wants to work his way up to a similar size trophy shelf as his brother. It’s very competitive in our house.
“You would think we would get used to watching but we still drive every lap with them. It’s so exciting to watch.”
It is not just the ASKC where Charlie is impressing.
Dad Stephen picks up the story: “He recently took part in the Honda Cup at Larkhall which was 30 of the top drivers in the UK.
“He ended up in 16th place as a novice, having started off at the back of the pack. That was against the best in the country.
“I thought he did very well and it was another proud parent moment.”
Charlie, who also currently leads the local club championship with only two more rounds to go, will be putting in the miles at practice ahead of his next outing at the end of the month.
Stephen concluded: “Both boys have simulators in the house with seat, steering wheel, the pedals and big screen. Charlie and Liam are forever racing against each other and their other karting friends.”
