'He'll take the next one' - Chelsea star backs Ross Barkley to make amends for penalty miss

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has confirmed that Ross Barkley will take the next penalty the Blues get after his miss against Valencia.

The 25-year-old was on the pitch for seven minutes at Stamford Bridge before blazing his spot-kick on to the bar and over, with the Blues losing 1-0.

There was a discussion before the penalty was taken between Tammy Abraham, Jorginho and Willian, with the latter looking obviously annoyed that he wasn't taking the spot-kick.

Frank Lampard confirmed that Barkley is the designated penalty taker when he is on the pitch, despite Jorginho and Willian having good history from the penalty spot.

But Christensen has backed the midfielder to take the next one and score if he gets the chance.

"We know Ross, he is going to take the next one as well, he always feels confident with penalties, he is one of the best ones which is why he was on the penalty today," Christensen said .

Another big talking point from the defeat to the Spanish side was the injury to Mason Mount, who hobbled off after just 16 minutes following a heavy challenge from Francis Coquelin.

Chelsea are currently monitoring the ankle situation, with Mount's injury yet to be determined.

And Christensen is disappointed that the youngster could be out of action for some time.

"Mason has been very important for us, he is great for us in our build-up and he is dangerous in front of goal so obviously he was a big loss, but then we have great players to come on so it should not hurt us too much," he added. "Hopefully he is not too bad as he is an important player.

"We were looking forward to having a great start to the [Champions League] campaign.

"We felt we were on top for most of the game. Valencia had some spells but we knew that was going to happen and we were ready for it. We kept working. Our work ethic was good all game and it felt we controlled most of it which is why it is tough to accept the goal against and the result in the end.

"We are not happy to let goals in from those situations and we know it can be costly, but now we look forward to the next game."
