'He'll get there': Jadon Sancho told he'll come good after after slow Manchester United start

Former Manchester United defender John O'Shea has backed Jadon Sancho to come good at Old Trafford despite his slow start.

The winger was United's most costly acquisition ahead of the new season, but while his fellow signings Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo have slotted seamlessly into Ole Gunnar Solskjae r's plans, Sancho has not hit the ground running.

Sancho was left on the bench for the entirety of United's 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday and in eight outings for the Reds he has yet to score a goal or lay on an assist for his team-mate.

While it is still early days for Sancho at Old Trafford, those numbers are surprising for a player who showcased so much productivity in his time at Borussia Dortmund.

In his last two Bundesliga seasons in full, Sancho registered an incredible haul of 25 goals and 27 assists.

Speaking to TalkSport, O'Shea said he's not concerned about Sancho yet and has backed the goals and assists to start flowing once he's settled back into the way of life in England.

"He'll get there," said the former United utility man.

"In terms of ability and settling in, different players are different everywhere. I know he grew up with City's academy and getting used to things again ... he's shown glimpses already, his fitness is building up and he'll be back creating goals, assists and scoring goals again very soon."

Competition is fierce in the forward positions for United, with the likes of Ronaldo, Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial battling for places in the front line.

It means Sancho will need to perform on a more consistent basis to force himself into the starting lineup more frequently and arguably lift those levels again if he's to become one of the first names on Solskjaer's team sheet.

O'Shea was a crucial squad player during his time with the Reds, filling in in a number of important positions over the course of his 12-year stint with the club.

The Irishman won the Champions League with United in 2008, as well as five Premier League titles and one FA Cup.
