'He just shot up the church': Driver chases down Texas shooter

A Sutherland Springs man says he chased down the gunman responsible for the mass shooting at a local church service in south-east Texas.

Twenty-six people were shot dead in a small church in what the state's governor described as "the largest mass shooting in the state's history".

Wilson County local Johnnie Langendorff told reporters he had pulled up at the intersection opposite the First Baptist Church when he saw Devin Kelley outside the building exchanging fire with another man.

"The shooter [Kelley] … [took] off and fled in his vehicle and the other gentleman came and said, 'We need to pursue him — he just shot up the church'," Mr Langendorff said.

"So that's what I did."

He said the unidentified man jumped into his car and they took off after Kelley down a road that leads out of town.

"He got a little bit of a jump on us and so we were doing about 95mph [153kph] … going around traffic and everything," Mr Langendorff said.

"Eventually he came to kind of a slow-down and after that, we got within just a few feet of him. And then he got off the road.

"He just lost control."

Mr Langendorff said he stayed on the phone with police while the second man got out of the car and pointed his rifle at Kelley's vehicle.

He said it took between five and seven minutes for the police to arrive and there was no movement from Kelley's car during that time.

"We asked him to get out and [there was] no movement or nothing. No response," Mr Langendorff said.

"The police arrived and pushed us back. And then … they took care of the rest. I didn't see anything after that."

The gunman was found dead in his vehicle.

Mr Langendorff said he didn't think twice about pursuing Kelley and he knew it was the "right thing" to do.

There has been a flood of support for his actions on Facebook, with many describing him as a hero.

"Thank you for doing what you did today. My kids and I don't live far from the church and I am so glad you helped stop this man from hurting more people," Sammie Price Aguilar posted.

"What I would not give to just shake your hand sir," Mark Lester said.
