'He is an asset to Ole' - Manchester United fans react to Mike Phelan's contract extension

Manchester United fans believe that Mike Phelan’s contract extension is a sign that the club are supporting manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Assistant manager Phelan penned a new deal on Monday which will see him remain in the dugout until 2024 at least.

First arriving in 2008 as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two, Phelan brings a wealth of experience to the role and is synonymous with winning trophies at Old Trafford.

The United coaching staff have come under pressure in recent weeks after defeats to West Ham and Young Boys in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, respectively, as well as a Premier League defeat to Aston Villa at Old Trafford and a 1-1 draw at home to Everton on Saturday.

The move to extend Phelan has been met with both joy and frustration from United supporters on social media.

Many fans are pleased with the news and see the contract as a reward for the work Phelan has done assisting Solskjaer, as well as putting to bed any rumours that there was going to be new coaching staff on their way to United.

However, a section of fans who want a regime change has been left disappointed by the move, as it's yet another sign of backing from the club hierarchy for Solskjaer's coaching set-up.
