'He has to calm down' - Steve McClaren's warning for Aleksandar Mitrovic after Leeds clash

Former Newcastle boss Steve McClaren says Aleksandar Mitrovic has to calm down, and was not surprised by the big striker's latest flashpoint.

Fulham forward Mitrovic should have been shown a red card against Leeds United today when he clattered into Ben White in the opening exchanges, with replays showing the striker led with his elbow.

However, the incident was missed by the on-field officials, making it likely that Mitrovic will be issued a retrospective ban this week.

And McClaren, who signed the Serbian for Newcastle in 2015, said: "That's how he is, that's what he was like as a kid when we signed him for Newcastle. He's so aggressive, he bullies you.

"That's what he did. The first five games he played, I think he got sent off twice for us. He has to calm down, he has to control his emotions and play the game."

Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe was adamant Mitrovic should have been shown a red card.

Hinchcliffe was clearly angered by the incident and quickly made it clear that the striker was fortunate not to be issued a straight red.

"It's going to be a physical battle with Ben White up against Mitrovic and that is really naughty, it really is a red card offence," he said on Sky Sports' commentary.

"It's completely unnecessary, he knows what he is doing and he's put an elbow into the face of White. He is very fortunate to still be on the pitch.

"You need aggression but in the right areas. That's not aggression, it's stupidity. As a coach that must drive you mad."
