Bristol City winger trains as Robins head to Middlesbrough in rude health

Bristol City will be hoping to inflict a fourth home defeat in a row on Middlesbrough when Lee Johnson's visit the Riverside on Tuesday evening.

After a recovery day on Sunday, the Robins returned to training on Monday with a light session for those involved in the 3-2 win over Sheffield United and a 'solid hour' for those who weren't, including Irish winger Callum O'Dowda.

O'Dowda missed the victory at Bramall Lane after a knee injury sustained prior to the international break and had been rated by Johnson as 50/50 on Friday but assistant head coach Dean Holden revealed the 23-year-old has trained.

Head coach Johnson will run the rule over the Robins on Tuesday morning before the squad fly up to the north east.

"Well he [O'Dowda] was back on the grass this morning with a smile on his face, which was great to see," said Holden.

"We're still concentrating on the lads that have played up at Sheffield United really but we're aware there's a big squad of players there and pretty much everybody will be needed at some point.

"It may be the last game of the season and the last five minutes for someone who feels out of the picture but they've got to make sure they're ready.

"We're going to fly up there on Tuesday, stay over and come back after the game. It was the train up and coach back at the weekend," confirmed Holden, who stayed behind in Bristol to watch the U23s development squad last Friday before taking in West Brom's 3-2 win over Birmingham at the Hawthorns on Friday night with one of City's analysts.

Holden admits the squad has a few 'bumps and bruises' from the weekend as they prepare to take on Tony Pulis' team but was giving little away in terms of tactics and selection. Goalkeepers Niki Maenpaa and Frank Fielding are the Robins' only long-term injury absentees.

Even if O'Dowda is fit for the Riverside, it's tough to see him winning a place back in the starting XI given the strength of City's performance over the Blades, particularly in an attacking sense.

Andi Weimann's hat-trick makes him an automatic starter against Boro while Johnson opted for a more compact midfield trio of Marlon Pack, Josh Brownhill and the fit again Korey Smith, with all three impressing in Yorkshire.

Victory for City will propel them into the top six again.
