'He fits the bill': Brendan Rodgers opens door to summer Celtic signing

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has opened the door to the permanent signing of Jeffrey Schlupp.

The left-back, who joined the Parkhead side on loan from Crystal Palace at the end of the January transfer window, has stood out with his performances in green and white so far.

Schlupp scored one and set up another as his team beat St Mirren 5-2 over a week ago before starting and completing 90 minutes again in a 2-0 victory over Hibernian yesterday.

The 32-year-old is out of contract at his parent club at the season's end, and Rodgers was recently asked about potentially making Schlupp's move permanent: "I don’t know [if he will be signed permanently]," he said (BBC Radio Scotland).

"I think initially it was just to come in and adapt to our playing style and support the squad, and anything further than that we will look at later on down the line.

"He’s a super professional. He fits the bill for us. That’s what’s always important with the players that we bring in.

"His mentality is good, he is a top professional. You see his body, and you see his physicality. At 32 years of age, and that’s because he looks after himself.

"So, he’s really adapting well and I’ve obviously got Greg on the side as well, if I need to bring him in."

Kieran Tierney has agreed to return to Celtic in the summer, although Greg Taylor is out of contract at the end of the campaign and, as it stands, will leave the club on a free transfer in a few months.

That opens a left-back berth in the squad for Schlupp to potentially take up.

It remains to be seen what business Rodgers and co will look to carry out in the off-season, with the full focus at Parkhead over the next few weeks and months on completing a domestic treble.

Celtic took another leap towards a sought-after clean sweep with their win over Hibs yesterday: "We were very good in the game, apart from a little spell in the second half," said Rodgers.

"I thought our compactness and control in the game was really, really good, and the keeper makes some really good saves.

"We just had a wee spell in the second half, maybe for 10-12 minutes, where we just loosened our passing and didn't quite connect the game, so that gives them a little bit of impetus.

"But no, looking through the course of the game, we were very good, and we have to be, because against a team that's high in confidence, we wanted to control their system, how they play.

"We have to move them, so we've got to get it side to side, to penetrate, to work them. The keeper makes some brilliant saves, but overall, I thought we were thoroughly deserving to get to the semi-final."
