'He delivers' - Steve McClaren backs Manchester United squad player for key role under Erik ten Hag

Steve McClaren is set to return to Manchester United this summer and he has already told the club they have a player at their disposal with the perfect attitude.

Erik ten Hag will arrive at Old Trafford in the coming weeks and is keen to bring his former FC Twente mentor with him as part of his backroom staff.

McClaren, 61, was Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant between 1999 and 2001 and later went on to manage the England national team during their infamous failed EURO 2008 qualification campaign.

Although his stock as a manager has dwindled in recent years, McClaren remains highly regarded by the incoming United boss and could provide priceless insider knowledge when he arrives at the club.

Speaking earlier in the year, the former United assistant gave his verdict on the current squad and, in particular, he explained why midfielder Scott McTominay should play a key role going forward.

The Scotland international divides opinion at Old Trafford, but the incoming assistant coach believes McTominay has all the key attributes of a proper United player.

“You put him on the field and he delivers," he told talkSPORT in January. "He’s a Manchester United player, seven or eight out of ten every week. That’s what makes a Manchester United player.

“He breaks up play, he’s box-to-box, he’s got energy, attitude, can deal with the ball, gets into the box and can score goals, he’s doing very well.”
