'He can play for two or three years' - Lee Johnson opens up on new Bristol City defender and vegan Ashley Williams

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson has given his reaction to the confirmed signing of central defender Ashley Williams.

The 86-cap Wales international was confirmed officially as a Robin on Friday and his new boss has given some background on the move and dispelled a few rumours.

For a start, Williams won't be in the squad. And Johnson also believes that the new recruit can play for several years yet.

Johnson also pointed out why we may see a slightly different Wales captain this season compared to the one that played at Stoke City last.

"I still think he's got a couple of years in him. Honestly," said Johnson.

"We've done all the physical testing and he's very, very powerful and he's very lean.

"He's got the best body fat percentage - he's been a vegan for six months, which is interesting. He's dropped about 10kg in weight from where he was last year at Stoke. So that's another good sign.

"Of course the feet slow up a little bit as time goes on, but you hope that the experience and new way of coaching gives him that lease of life.

"He's come in and I'll tell you now I've seen people talking about him being up near our highest paid players and all that stuff - he hasn't and it's something that's come in that's worked for both parties because obviously he's very keen to continue his Wales career.

"He's keen to keep playing at Bristol City - he sees it as a good club - we see it as a real good bit of experience and a quality player and he's definitely got another 10 or 15 caps in him for sure," explained Johnson.

The City boss also discussed that new diet and whether it was a serious decision to prolong Williams' career.

Johnson reflected on his own attempts to change his diet.

"I think so yeah. I was chatting to him about it the other day. I tried Veganuary but I ran out of ideas so I gave up," he said.

"But he's stuck with it. But it's just interesting. Whatever he's done to lose that mass as you get older, what you don't want to do is have to carry it. So the brain is going to be sharp, the footballing ability is there and the power's good and in my eyes it's a good decision.

"Time will tell but I believe that he's got two or three years in his career.

"He's got to enjoy it and maximise it, and we'll make sure we get him going," said Johnson, who denied that there might have been a bid from Forest Green for Williams because of his food choices, with a chuckle.
