'He can fight this' - Former Leeds United teammate prays for Norman Hunter as legend battles coronavirus

Trevor Cherry says Norman Hunter has the battling qualities needed to fight coronavirus.

It was confirmed on Friday that Elland Road legend and 1966 World Cup winner Hunter is being treated in hospital after testing positive for Covid-19.

The 76-year-old made 726 appearances in all competitions for the Whites and was an integral member of Don Revie’s iconic teams during his 15-year stay at Elland Road.

United released a statement on Friday morning about Hunter, sending their support to his family and warning the public to give space.

A raft of messages followed from current Leeds stars and ex-players whilst thousands of fans showed their support on social media.

"It goes without saying we all hope and pray he pulls through and overcomes this horrendous virus," Cherry, who was a teammate of Hunter's at Elland Road, told the Sun.

"Everybody of a certain age worries about it - I'm 72 now - but if anyone can fight it off then Norman can.

"He's built like that and is a strong lad with a lot of willpower.

"As soon as I heard the news, I got on the phone to wish him all the best and the other lads will have done, too.

"I'm a Leeds fan and have been to seven or eight home games this season, so I've seen Norman, Eddie Gray and a few of the other guys quite a lot in the last 12 months.

"I know Norman's struggled with hearing in recent years but otherwise he's in good health."
