HYDERABAD: In a huge relief to TRS MP Maloth Kavitha, Justice G Sridevi of the high court on Thursday set aside the six-month jail term handed over to her by a trial court.
The Mahabubabad MP challenged her conviction and sentence awarded by the special court in Hyderabad that was hearing cases against legislators. She was convicted in a case that charged her with bribing voters in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The MP had filed an appeal against the trial court order before the high court.
According to her counsel Zeeshan Adnan Mahmood, the trial court relied solely on an alleged confession made by an accused before police, which has no sanctity or validity before the law. Apart from this alleged confession, there was no other evidence on record against the MP to link her to the accused or to the alleged offence.
